World Water Week: Why Hydration Matters for Healthy Muscle Function

Water Is Part of How Your Body Moves

World Water Week is a helpful reminder that water supports far more than thirst. Your muscles, blood, joints, connective tissue, and nervous system all depend on adequate fluid to function normally.


Picture finishing a workout with tight calves, heavy legs, or a stiff lower back. Hydration may not be the only factor involved, but it can influence how efficiently your body circulates blood, regulates temperature, contracts muscles, and begins recovery.


As a massage therapist, I also see how hydration fits into the larger picture of pain relief, mobility, and physical recovery. Drinking enough water will not replace therapeutic care, and it will not “flush out” every toxin or cure muscle cramps by itself. However, consistent hydration gives your body essential support before and after movement: and before and after massage.

How Water Supports Muscle Contraction

Every muscle contraction depends on communication between your nerves and muscle cells. That process involves electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and calcium, which operate in a fluid-based environment.


Adequate hydration helps your body maintain the fluid balance needed for:

  • ✅ Normal nerve signaling

  • ✅ Muscle contraction and relaxation

  • ✅ Coordination and balance

  • ✅ Temperature regulation

  • ✅ Delivery of oxygen and nutrients to working tissue


When you become dehydrated, your blood volume can decrease and your heart may work harder to circulate oxygen. You may notice fatigue, reduced endurance, difficulty concentrating, or a heavier feeling during exercise.


Hydration is not a performance shortcut. It is one of the basic conditions your body needs to keep working efficiently.


Circulation Carries Support to Your Muscles

Blood plasma is largely water. That means hydration contributes to the volume and circulation your body uses to transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and metabolic byproducts.


During exercise, your muscles need increased blood flow to meet their demands. Water also supports sweating and skin blood flow, two important ways your body releases heat.

Support circulation by:

  1. Drinking regularly throughout the day.

  2. Starting exercise reasonably hydrated.

  3. Replacing fluids gradually after heavy sweating.

  4. Adjusting your intake when temperatures rise.


Do not wait until you feel extremely thirsty, especially during long workouts, outdoor activities, or hot weather. Thirst is useful, but it may not always keep pace with rapid fluid loss.

Hydration and Connective-Tissue Comfort

Your joints, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and cartilage contain water as part of their normal structure. Water helps these tissues maintain their physical properties and supports the body’s ability to move smoothly.


That does not mean drinking extra water instantly “lubricates” tight fascia or eliminates joint pain. Connective-tissue comfort depends on many factors, including movement, strength, sleep, inflammation, injury history, stress, and treatment needs.


Still, consistent hydration can support the normal environment in which your tissues function. Pair it with:

  • 🔹 Gentle mobility exercises

  • 🔹 Regular walking and position changes

  • 🔹 Adequate nutrition

  • 🔹 Rest and recovery

  • 🔹 Targeted therapeutic massage when appropriate


If a joint remains painful, swollen, weak, or restricted, seek appropriate medical evaluation rather than assuming dehydration is the cause.

Why Hydration Matters During Exercise Recovery

Sweating causes fluid loss. The amount varies significantly based on your body size, workout intensity, clothing, climate, and individual sweat rate.


After activity, water supports your body as it:

  • Restores normal fluid balance

  • Regulates temperature

  • Circulates nutrients

  • Supports kidney function

  • Returns muscles and connective tissue toward baseline

  • Prepares you for your next training session


For longer or more intense workouts, electrolytes may also matter because sweat contains sodium and other minerals. Water alone may not replace every substance lost through heavy sweating. Avoid forcing excessive amounts of plain water in a short period. Overhydration can dilute blood sodium and become dangerous, particularly during endurance activity. Drink steadily and follow sports medicine or clinician guidance when your training demands are high.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

There is no universal number that works for every person. Your fluid needs change based on:

  • Body size and age

  • Activity level and sweat rate

  • Outdoor temperature and humidity

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or illness

  • Diet and intake of water-rich foods

  • Medications and health conditions


A useful general starting point comes from the National Academies’ water-intake guidance:

2.7 liters, or about 91 ounces

Adult men

3.7 liters, or about 125 ounces

These figures represent total water, not simply the amount poured into a glass. Total water includes beverages and the water found in foods. Fruits, vegetables, soups, yogurt, oatmeal, and other moist foods can contribute meaningfully.


For many adults, roughly 20% of daily water comes from food, with the remainder coming from beverages. Your personal starting point may be higher or lower depending on your body and lifestyle.


What About the “Half Your Body Weight” Rule?


You may have also heard that you should drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.


For example:

If you weigh 140 pounds, half of your body weight is 70, giving you a starting goal of about 70 ounces of water per day.


This isn't an official medical requirement. It's simply an easy rule of thumb that can give you a reasonable starting point. And when you remember that some of your daily water comes from food, the two recommendations aren't necessarily as different as they first appear.


Your Water Needs Can Change


Your body doesn't require the exact same amount of water every single day. You may need more when you're:

  • Exercising or sweating heavily

  • Spending time outside in hot weather

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Sick with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea

  • Eating a diet higher in sodium


Instead of obsessing over hitting one exact number, use the recommendations as a starting point and pay attention to what your body needs.


For a simple daily goal, half your body weight in ounces can be an easy way to estimate how much to drink, while remembering that food and other beverages contribute to your overall hydration too.


The goal of Water Week isn't to force down as much water as possible. It's to become more aware of your hydration, drink consistently throughout the day, and build a habit you can actually maintain.

Use a Practical Starting Routine

Start here:

  1. Drink water with meals.

  2. Keep a refillable bottle nearby.

  3. Take regular sips between meals.

  4. Drink before, during, and after exercise.

  5. Increase fluids during heat or prolonged activity.

  6. Include water-rich foods in your meals.

  7. Adjust based on thirst, sweat, and how you feel.


Pale-yellow urine and regular urination can offer general clues about hydration for many healthy adults. Very dark urine, dizziness, unusual fatigue, a dry mouth, or a rapid heartbeat may signal that you need fluids: or medical attention, depending on the situation.


Do not use urine color as a diagnosis. If you have kidney disease, heart failure, liver disease, diabetes, a fluid restriction, or another medical condition, follow your clinician’s instructions instead of adopting a general hydration target.

Should You Drink More Water Before Massage?

Arrive for massage normally hydrated, but do not overdrink immediately beforehand. A comfortable amount of water during the hours before your appointment is generally more practical than trying to consume a large volume all at once.


Hydration can support your body’s normal circulation and recovery processes, but massage does not require excessive water to “remove toxins.” I use targeted techniques to address muscle tension, restricted movement, and pain patterns; your kidneys and other organs handle the body’s normal waste-processing functions.


After a therapeutic massage, drink according to thirst and your usual needs. Prioritize a balanced meal, gentle movement, and rest if your body feels tired.
