The Fourth Trimester: Why Postnatal Massage is My Secret for New Mom Recovery

The first three trimesters of pregnancy are filled with doctor’s appointments, nursery planning, and growing anticipation. But then, the baby arrives, and suddenly the focus shifts entirely from you to that tiny human.

We call it the Fourth Trimester: that critical 12-week period after birth when your body is doing the heavy lifting of healing while you navigate the sleepless nights of new parenthood.

In my practice at Bodywork By Britt, I see it all the time: new moms who are exhausted, physically sore, and feeling a bit disconnected from their own skin. I created this post because I want you to know that your recovery matters just as much as your baby’s milestones.

Postnatal massage isn’t a luxury or a "spa day" treat; it is a vital tool for physical and mental restoration.

What Exactly is the "Fourth Trimester"?

The Fourth Trimester is a developmental bridge.

It is the time when your body transitions from "vessel" back to "self," all while managing a massive hormonal crash and the physical demands of newborn care. During this time, your organs are shifting back into place, your skin is retracting, and your musculoskeletal system is trying to find a new center of gravity. I believe this window is the most important time to invest in your well-being.

The Physical Toll: More Than Just "Being Tired"

When people think of postpartum, they think of fatigue.

But I see the physical reality on my table every day:

🔹 "Nursing Neck": The constant downward gaze and hunched shoulders from feeding.

🔹 Hip Instability: The lingering effects of relaxin, the hormone that loosened your joints for birth.

🔹 Fluid Retention: The "puffiness" that often lingers long after the hospital stay.

I use a combination of Therapeutic Massage and Medical Massage techniques to address these specific structural issues.

My approach isn't about fluff; it's about helping your body restore its natural alignment and mobility.

4 Reasons Why I Make Postnatal Massage a Priority for My Clients

1. Hormone Regulation and Mood Support

The "baby blues" are real, and they are largely driven by a sharp drop in estrogen and progesterone.

Massage therapy has been shown to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and increase oxytocin (the "love" hormone).

When I work with new moms, I’m not just relaxing muscles; I’m helping your nervous system switch from "fight or flight" to "rest and digest." This shift is crucial for managing postpartum anxiety and improving sleep quality: even if that sleep only comes in small windows.

2. Managing the "Postpartum Puff"

Did you know your blood volume increases by nearly 50% during pregnancy?

That extra fluid doesn't just disappear the moment you give birth.

You can also book a Manual Lymphatic Drainage session in your postnatal season to help your body process that excess fluid.

Reduces swelling in the legs and feet.

Supports detoxification after anesthesia or medication.

Boosts the immune system during a time when you’re physically depleted.

3. Structural Realignment

Your body spent nine months changing its shape to accommodate a baby. Your ribs expanded, your pelvis tilted, and your spine curved. I use targeted Myofascial Release to help gently guide your tissues back into alignment.

My goal is to help you feel "at home" in your body again, without the constant pulling and tension that often follows birth.

4. Improving Breastfeeding Success

This is a benefit many moms don't expect.

By releasing the tension in your pectorals, shoulders, and mid-back, I can help make the breastfeeding posture much more comfortable. Increased relaxation also leads to better milk let-down, as stress is one of the biggest inhibitors of lactation.

Why My Approach is Different

I don't believe in "one-size-fits-all" massage. When you come to see me for a Prenatal or Postnatal session, I start by listening to your story: not just the medical details, but how you feel in your body right now.

✔️ For C-section moms: I’m currently completing advanced training in scar tissue therapy using the Dolphin Neurostim, a technique designed to support tissue mobility and nervous system regulation. Once available, this work can help soften adhesions and improve the overall feel and appearance of the scar. In the meantime, I focus on helping your body relax and addressing any areas that are currently holding tension.

✔️ For "Nursing Neck" sufferers: I target the deep stabilizers of the neck and chest.

✔️ For the overwhelmed: Sometimes, I simply provide a quiet, safe space where nobody is asking anything of you for 60 minutes.

Every session is results-oriented and strictly follows an evidence-based approach to your healing.

When Can You Start?

You don’t have to wait 6 weeks to start feeling better. I can see clients as early as the day after delivery, depending on how you’re feeling and what your body needs.

Early sessions are typically gentle and focused—like relieving neck and shoulder tension from nursing or supporting overall relaxation.

If you had a C-section or any complications, I always recommend checking in with your OB-GYN or midwife first.

From there, we can gradually build into more comprehensive work as your body heals.

The "Hour of You"

Being a new mom is a 24/7 job.

But you cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking an hour for a postnatal massage isn't selfish: it's a maintenance requirement. It’s about restoring your energy so you can show up fully for your new little one.

I’ve seen moms walk into my room looking like they’re carrying the weight of the world and walk out looking like they’ve finally taken their first deep breath in weeks. That transformation is why I specialize in this work.
